Dear members and friends of FinnCham,
It’s almost Christmas, and Beijing is currently draped in a rare blanket of snow this week. Hotels, restaurants, and companies have dedicated substantial efforts for Christmas decoration after a prolonged break. The air is filled with Christmas music, and various festivities like Christmas markets, tree lighting parties, and other Christmas-themed activities are in full swing. The festive spirit is palpable, and this year, not everyone has opted to fly back home for Christmas. In many ways, China is demonstrating a warm embrace towards international tourism and businesses. |

China has reopened its borders, aiming to revive international tourism and travel. Several visa-free travel policies from the pre-pandemic era have been reinstated, and new policies have been introduced to facilitate short-term visits to China for people from various countries. Depending on one's country of origin and destination within China, visa-free entry spans from 24 hours to 30 days. Recently, China announced unilateral visa-free travel for 15 days to holders of ordinary passports from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia. While Nordic countries are not included in this trial group, Finnish ordinary passport holders, for instance, can benefit from a 144-hour (6 days) visa-free transit policy to specific Chinese cities upon arrival or a 30-day visa-free travel option to the province of Hainan. Amidst the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions, these travel policies are a welcome gesture, arriving at an opportune moment as this year commemorates the 45th anniversary of China's reform and opening up.
China's rapid development is striking for those living within its society. An excellent example of this rapid progression is China's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, a target previously perceived as implausible. Presently, even the most skeptical individuals cannot deny the reality of this goal. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2023, China's use of fossil fuels is predicted to start declining significantly from 2024 onwards. If this projection holds true, Beijing's carbon emissions may peak this year, marking the country's attainment of its carbon emissions cap goal seven years ahead of schedule. Attaining a peak in China’s CO2 emissions before 2030 hinges on advancements in three critical areas: energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and reduction of coal usage. Forecasts suggest that China’s primary energy demand will grow at a much slower rate through 2030 compared to the overall economy, primarily due to efficiency gains and a shift away from heavy industry. A transformation in the energy sector is anticipated to lead to substantial improvements in air quality. Solar energy is projected to become the primary energy source around 2045. Demand for coal is expected to plummet by over 80% by 2060, with reductions of around 60% for oil and more than 45% for natural gas. Additionally, it is estimated that by 2060, nearly 20% of electricity will be utilized in generating hydrogen.
This year also commemorates the 70th anniversary of the China-Finland bilateral trade agreement. You can find a brief interview I conducted HERE. Despite the passage of time, the number of Finnish companies in China continues to grow, signifying the expansion of FinnCham. This growth is not limited to Finnish companies alone; we are increasingly collaborating with other Nordic entities. In our guest writer section today, you can read about the endeavors of Swedish Eletta Group, one of our newest member companies, in China.
Success, as we all know, demands considerable effort, especially in such a bustling environment. Now, it's time to take a moment to pause and be with our loved ones. Today, we are hosting our final event of the year, the Traditional Finnish Christmas Party at the Finnish restaurant MOI. We also want to thank FinnCham Guangdong Chairman Lasse Liukkonen for great cooperation during past years, and welcome new Chairman Ville Majanen to the team.
On behalf of FinnCham Beijing, I extend warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Eletta Group: From Water Turbines in Power stations to Cancer Treatment |
|
|
|
Eletta is a privately owned company group from Sweden and has since 1947 mainly designed and manufactured Flow meters and Flow monitors for liquids and gases, together with some other field instruments for different measurement parameters. The headquarter is in Stockholm, Sweden, housed in its own production and office facilities. Eletta has been synonymous with flow monitoring through many industries worldwide. The Flow Monitors and Flow Meters, which are of originally patented design, are extremely robust and reliable and therefore well suited to be mounted in rugged and harsh industrial environments such as Nuclear Power stations, Steel works, Cement plants, Paper mills but the products can also be found in research laboratories and particle accelerators which have a much cleaner environment. |

Wherever there is a need for safe, reliable, and long-lasting supervision of liquids and gases in processing pipes, Eletta’s products are the easy choice. The Eletta Group has subsidiaries in Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Switzerland, China, and the USA In order to explain what value our products bring to the customer I will describe applications where Eletta’s products are used to prevent serious industrial accidents and where they help make cancer treatment possible. |

Power stations In a Hydro Power station, lots of water is being pumped around in pipes for different purposes. To create electrical energy, which will be distributed to consumers, the station is placed in a river where the water stream is blocked with a wall forming a large dam. The running water from the dam, when they open the gate, is led through a large tunnel and in the tunnel, there’s is huge turbine located which will start to spin when the water hits the turbine blades and start to produce electricity. The large turbine has large special designed bearings to support the rotor which spins with a high velocity and the bearings will reach a high temperature which can severely damage their function. Therefore, there is a water-cooling system installed which prevents the bearings to be overheated. The water-cooling system is equipped with Eletta Flow Monitors to monitor and supervise the water feeding pipes so there is enough water provided to cool the bearings to a suitable temperature. This is a very critical application as if, for some reason, the cooling water is prevented from reaching the bearings, the turbine will break down and needs to be repaired at large costs. The flow monitors shut the system down in case of such a sudden interruption of the water flow. Due to its simple and robust design the reliability is undoubtedly extremely high for these calibrated safety devices. The response time for an alarm from the instruments can be calculated in microseconds and can thereby very quickly secure expensive parts. Also, in case of a breakdown, in the repair period, no electricity can be produced from this turbine. Fortunately, many Power stations have more than one turbine but nevertheless, the costs involved if one turbine breaks down, are enormous. A big number of Power stations around the world rely on Eletta products to avoid this breakdown and many meters have been installed for over 30 years without any maintenance required. |

Particle accelerator for cancer treatment A particle accelerator is a machine that uses electromagnetic fields to accelerate electrically charged, very small particles, electrons, and protons, to very high speeds and energies, and to contain the particles in a certain form into a defined beam. The particle beam is hold inside a pipe under vacuum to reach the high velocity needed in the research laboratory or in a defined and designed medical particle accelerator. To accelerate the particles, you use electromagnets which are placed within a short distance from each other around a beam pipe and the beam pipe is designed as a closed circular loop wherein the acceleration takes part and then released the protons at the right speed and energy into a thin and very precise beam. This accurate beam is pointed very exactly to the tumor in the patient. Of course, when creating so much energy and magnetic fields, high demands are necessary to choose the correct instrument to control the cooling water that keeps the electromagnets to avoid being overheated. The Eletta mechanical Flow monitors are ideal as they are not affected by radiation or strong magnetic fields which would kill all electronic flow monitors on the market. That’s why many of the world manufacturers of medical accelerators has been using Eletta products since the 1960´s. As a patient, you don’t see the actual accelerator as this is built into the cellar of the hospital and the patient is lying in a comfortable bed in a designed radiation room. A sophisticated designed software is running the proton beam canon in a three-dimension way for precise treatment of the cancer.
Eletta came to China in the early 2000 and established a representation office in Beijing, which later turned into a WOFE in 2007. Today, we have sales offices in Wuhan, Chengdu and Shanghai and a service center / manufacturing in BDA, Beijing.
