Dear members and friends of FinnCham,

We have just landed in the year of the Rabbit. In Chinese culture, the rabbit is known to be the luckiest out of all the twelve animals. Right now, it sounds like a well-justified reputation, as we finally find ourselves back to a near pre-Covid China. The road has been rocky; as China has at long last lifted Covid restrictions, a massive wave of infections wiped across the country.
No one knows the exact figures due to lack of data, but obviously the vast majority has experienced it firsthand. I've had it, and almost everyone I know has had it. It has also taken its death toll, but again, no one knows the real numbers. Presumably, not even the authorities.

There were too many elderly people with other underlying health issues. Even without the Omicron infection, pneumonia is the leading cause of death due to infectious disease in the elderly - . However, that all happened before the year of the Rabbit. After the Spring Festival, which officially ended on February 8th with the Lantern Festival, those who are living in China have found themselves finally back to an almost pre-Covid situation. Emphasis on “almost” as there are lingering challenges, including at least the shortage of international flights and inbound/outbound mass tourism. Though these are gradually returning to usual levels. “Almost" is already very good.

The Two Sessions will be held in the beginning of March. The term “Two Sessions” refers to the yearly plenary meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which are China's top legislative and top political advisory body. The growth target and concrete policies are important outcomes from the meeting. Given that many provinces have already set their local growth targets, it is assumed that the  One indicator of the positive economic outlook was the Spring Festival travel volume. During the weeklong Spring Festival holiday, China saw nearly 2.9 million cross-border trips, up 120.5 percent year-on-year, and 308 million domestic trips, up 23.1 percent, the . As business visas are already being issued, we are going to see plenty of business delegations from China to Europe and from Europe to China throughout the year. China’s major concern has been domestic consumption, or rather the thereof. It will be interesting to see how consumers react in the near future.

How are Finnish companies feeling about their future in China after this rapid change? We have just launched our annual Business Confidence Survey (Feb 8-22) and will be sharing the results in March. This year we are conducting it jointly as Team Finland (together with the Embassy and Business Finland). If you are leading a Finnish company and doing business in China, your participating is much appreciated. If your company hasn't received the survey, please contact us by email (finncham@finnchambj.org). There is still one week until the deadline. The result publication event will be open for all, so it’s something to look forward to. We are also having plenty of other online and offline events covering various aspects of doing business in China. You're welcome to join us! Our February guest writer is Moi Education. They teach the Finnish language to Chinese people in a very professional way.
