Dear Members and friends of FBCB,

We have already entered the third quarter of the year, which undoubtedly has been the most unusual year since decades in terms of business. For the most of the first half of 2020 the only topic has been COVID-19: How will it affect us, how will we survive? These have been very valid questions even inside the Finnish business community.
A couple of weeks ago European Union agreed on a stimulus package on confronting the devastating affects the COVID 19 has had on the economy. Although the package has been under scrutiny after approval, it seemed to have created some confidence in recovery or survival at least. This can be seen in the valuation of Euro, which especially against RMB has been soaring during the last couple of weeks.

The virus hit the World in waves starting from China followed by Europe. This can also be seen in the current recovery patterns, while China and most of Europe are starting to dismantle the restrictive measures in places, like the US, South America and Africa the virus is still going strong. In this regard the World seems to be temporarily divided. While according to the The coronavirus effect on global economic sentiment, July 2020 Global Executive Survey by McKinley, respondents are more positive towards economic growth during the next six months compared to previous months, except in North America and developing markets. The overall expectations are turning positive in global context according to the survey, as for the first time in 2020 the respondents foresee a increase than decline in companies’ profit during the next six months.

As China was the first country to encounter the COVID 19 outbreak, it is also among the first places chasing the “new normal”, life after the virus. The development towards lifting restrictions has been strong. From Beijing’s point of view things were looking very good before the Xinfadi meat market discovery last month, which took us back a few steps in terms of recovery. Regardless, the domestic restrictions in China in terms are loosening and business is its on way to resuming normality. To some extend this also applies to international business travelers. After several months Finnair was able to resume a direct flight connection between Shanghai and Helsinki 23rd of July. More information on China travel policy later in this newsletter.

Building on what was mentioned earlier, we are preparing for several good offline events in August and September. First of all, we will have an end of summer dinner and mingle at the relaxed atmosphere of Eudora station Roof Patio on the 14th of August. As a real return to business mode, the Ambassador will lead a delegation visit to Chengdu at the end of August. Turning to September, China International Fair for Trade in Services or CIFTIS will take place in Beijing. FBCB is joining the Nordic Pavilion and all member companies are welcome to join as well. Finally, the Zhongguancun Forum will take place 17th-20th September. For all of these events you can find more information later in this newsletter.

This month’s guestwriter article comes from IndoorAtlas, one of our long-time member companies. While we have gotten used to positioning on a ma and outdoors, IndoorAtlas is taking indoor positioning to a whole new level.

Sincerely Yours,

Juha Tuominen
Chairman

On 21st July, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released the Public Announcement on Presenting Negative Results of COVID-19 Nucleic Acid Tests before Boarding by Passengers Taking Flights Bound for China.

Updates on latest travel and quarantine policy due to COVID-19 are HERE. Information provided by European Chamber.

Finnair has received permission from Chinese authorities to begin operating one weekly flight as of 23 July between Helsinki and Shanghai with its Airbus A350 aircraft. The flight schedule will be published in all Finnair sales channels. Finland has opened its borders for work-related travel from China but entry to Finland is still restricted for the time being pending an EU level decision on reciprocity. Finnair currently offers smooth connections to 24 European destinations from Helsinki.

The re-opening of our Shanghai route is great news for our customers and an important step for us, as China continues to play a key role in Finnair’s strategy”, says Ole Orvér, Chief Commercial Officer, Finnair. “We look forward to increasing our service to the Chinese market soonest.

Guest writer: Indoor Atlas - creator of a seamless indoor world
Dear Finnish Business Council members,

We are very pleased and honored as guest writer to write this month’s newsletter. For some of you who might not know who we are, IndoorAtlas is the indoor positioning platform for mobile applications. We provide the full technology stack and building blocks to add features like indoor positioning, wayfinding, geofencing, asset tracking, and location intelligence into any experience you create.

Our vision is to create a seamless indoor world that is discoverable for people and businesses around the world. We want to make every mobile app in the world location aware – in every building in the world. We want everyone to be able to discover the indoor world around them, wherever they are. We do this by making our patented technology available to every app developer, no matter what size, market or interest.

IndoorAtlas China Limited

Even though Baidu was one of the initial investors of the company and China was almost the first market that we started our commercial deployments, it took us a few years to officially establish our own subsidiary in China. It has been quite a journey and experience for us. IndoorAtlas China Limited (芬图科技(北京)有限公司) was officially established later 2019, and our HongKong subsidiary was also established in April 2020. We would like to take the chance to thank all of our partners in China for their support and trust in our technology.

China market is a huge opportunity and serving it properly is best done locally. We are looking for new partners in China to expand the indoor positioning market and further develop the use cases that location data could support. We are looking forward to continuing and creating partnership with existing and new partners.

It has been very difficult for most of the companies to operate and even survive during the pandemic crisis. Our global businesses also have been impacted from various perspectives. Great thanks to the effort and commitment of our team and the trust of our partners, despite many business leads moving very slowly in the US and Indian markets, we managed to sustain our business and started to create new business opportunities in China and Europe. We are more than happy to share some of our latest technical and commercial achievements as below.

Product Updates
·      Offline SDK available for China. The 3.x series of IndoorAtlas SDKs runs the state-of-the-art positioning algorithms in the device. Network breaks are no longer an issue, and accurate magnetic-aided tracking is available uninterrupted.
·      Cart mode, AKA on-wheels mode, a new mode of positioning, which can used to locate objects which don’t take steps.
·      Points of Interest, or POIs, can be added to your locations in app.indooratlas.com, and can now be downloaded to your app through the SDK.
·      Improvements to background positioning in the (default) high-accuracy mode, for cases where the device is in a pocket, hand bag, etc.
·      Improved low-power mode, to enable better positioning performance in apps running in low end devices, in the background, and other challenging use cases.

IndoorAtlas and Samsung SDS Join Forces
IndoorAtlas and Samsung SDS recently announced a collaboration to jointly provide indoor location-based services for the global exhibition market. This collaboration will enable Samsung SDS to provide innovative location-aware applications and services for global trade shows whose growth is driven by the growing popularity of face-to-face conversations and authenticity in business promotions across various industries.

To Conclude
At the end, we wish all fellow members of Finnish Business Council best of luck and strive for more exciting business opportunities in the China market in the near future. SISU!
Sincerely Yours,
